Montesquieu-Volvestre is located at the junction of the departments of the Haute-Garonne and Ariège, in an area rich in historical sites to be found in the foothills of the Pyrenées. |

Montesquieu-Volvestre was built as a fortress by the Romans and then became, in the 13th century, a ‘bastide’ or fortified medieval new town which specialised in the industry of pastel, linen and woollen cloth. One can still admire medieval houses and a fortified church within its walls. In the 13th century, three water mills were operating on the river Arize; now only the Moulin de Barrau survives, west of the town. |
